How can I improve my coordination ?

April 25, 2023 by Alice Leave a Comment

When people talk about fitness, one of the most common subjects would be gaining power and speed, stretching, strength training, and losing weight. However, you would not be able to find a lot of information regarding coordination. One highly recommended option would be to take piano lessons.

However, good coordination could be found to be at the heart of everything we do. Majority of the people have a preconceived notion that levels of coordination would be predetermined. However, the truth is that coordination has been found to be a learnable skill and one that would be considered to be worth highly pursuing.

What coordination is all about

Coordination would be regarded as the ability to use different parts of the body together efficiently and smoothly under control and also by using the right muscle, at the right time and at the proper intensity so that the desired action could be achieved. It would involve muscle tension, timing, direction, distance, and speed. In other words, coordination would be considered to be the ability to use more than two body parts at the same time.

So, if you would not find yourself to be highly coordinated, it is not something that you need to be overly worried about. This is because rather than coordination being considered to be a predetermined skill, it would be considered to be one which you would be able to train and learn.

How to improve coordination

Coordination has been found to be located in a part of your brain known as the cerebellum. This would be linked to your ability to not only think but also how fast you would be able to process that information. Hence, there would be certain exercises that could help you in getting better self-control over your mind and coordination skills.

Since improving coordination skills would be considered to be a learning process and a slow one, it would require trial and error, usually evoking a mix of enjoyment and frustration. Hence, you would need to be patient when you would be learning a new activity or movement. You need to slow yourself down in order to allow your nervous system to learn the new movement. In addition, you would also need to break down the movement into chunks so that you would be able to learn one movement at a time. Lastly, the movement would need to be visualized so that a clearer picture of the movement could be attained.

Exercises to improve coordination

Balancing exercises would be considered to be one of the most highly recommended ways to improve coordination. These kinds of exercises could help you in learning how to control your coordination and weight distribution. Toss and catch would also be considered great to improve your central vision. Lastly, you could use your opposite hand to perform some daily activities like writing, moving objects, and brushing your teeth. Even though it would require a lot of concentration and effort in the beginning, you would be forcing your mind to think about movements in a different way.
